1. How to Acquire Legendary Pelts (Unlock Secret Garment Sets at Gus)

Why Pelts Matter

Legendary pelts are the only way to unlock Secret Garment Sets at Gus Macmillan. The game never tells you this, making these outfits hidden content.

Best Weapons / Guns

Use the weapon or gun you're most comfortable with, adapting to each situation: from small to large targets, from fleeing prey to lethal predator, whether facing a solitary animal or a group encounter.

Carcano Rifle → best long-range damage
Rolling Block Rifle → high power, slow but reliable
Bolt-Action / Springfield → budget starter rifles
Elephant Rifle → powerful medium range encounters
Any Repeaters → use express ammo to maximize DPS
Navy Revolver / LeMat → backup for its lethal protectors, small targets or desperate times
Use the improved bow for a silent approach
Use express ammunition and avoid explosive ammo or shotguns (ruin pelts)
Varmint rifles with normal ammo can also kill small legendary animals

How to Hunt for Pelts

Approach the spawn area slowly to avoid despawns
Use Eagle Eye to follow legendary tracks
Use Dead Eye for clean headshots
Bring food, health/stamina tonics and a fast, high-stamina horse

How to Unlock Secret Garment Sets

Go to the location on the map with the ? question mark or golden paw icon
Kill the legendary animal with headshots if possible
Skin it and get the pelt
Find the nearest location on the map to go to Gus ASAP
Avoid getting killed or falling while travelling. Don't lose the pelt!
Sell the legendary pelt to Gus and the secret garment set for that animal becomes available in his shop

A legendary animal is a random encounter event, but you can force it to happen when the conditions above are met. Each one varies and has its own unique conditions. A "???" marker appears when one is nearby.
