How Naturalist Role Works? Best Way to Level Up, Tips & Tricks - Red Dead Online Guide Walkthrough
Finally, a new frontier pursuit the NATURALIST role is released for Red Dead Online. Here's our guide how to be a Naturalist with tips and tricks. We also have the video guide to tell you how it works and what are the best methods to be an efficient field agent as Naturalist.
How do you become a Naturalist?
Where to go? Get the role plus a cinematic intro cutscenes by meeting the two new characters in the game Harriet and Gus. First you need to buy the role for 25 gold bars just like the last Moonshiner role. Now you can go to the Welcome Center in Strawberry and follow the video guide below. We also have the best practices to level up fast before doing the legendary missions.

How does Naturalist role work?
- Get the role from Harriet by buying the "Sample Kit" for 25 Gold Bars after the intro shown in the video guide above.
- What you need: Varmint rifle, Varmint sedative ammo from Harriet's shop & the Advanced Camera which can be bought in the merchant or catalogue.
- You can find Harriet and Gus in various locations unlike Madam Nazar who needs to be found on daily reset.
- On Harriet's shop, buy the new “Sedative Varmint Rifle Ammo” as many as you can and buy the pamphlet to craft the ammo. Note: the ingredient needed for the ammo can be looted from random NPC enemies.
- Equipped this ammo to your Varmint Rifle to enable you to tranquilize/sedate animals without killing them. Scan for animals near you
- Use your camera to take a picture of the animal (should be alive and not sedated), while on camera mode click study/show info to know how to make a clean kill and perfect pelt/hide/carcass later for Gus.
- Fire away and sedate the animal. After bringing down your target, take a sample from the napping animal by using the interact button “Take Sample”
- Revive if you want, but the animal will wake up after a few minutes without your intervention
- To complete the field guide for the specific animal, you need to kill and skin another (same species) until all animals in that category are done.
- Tips: To practice, look for a ranch that has caged animals (farm animal) inside to minimize the time chasing it. The effective sequence is,
- A. Take a picture,
- B. Sedate/tranquilize the animal
- C. Take sample
- D. Kill another for the pelt/hide, done
- E. Rinse repeat for the next animal
- F. Sell the sample to Harriet & Bring the perfect pelts/carcass to Gus
How about the Legendary Animals?
Legendary animals come to Red Dead Online with the Naturalist role and it brings interesting concept of animal preservation and straight up poaching for the current most coveted armor sets.

TLDR Naturalist role requires you to gather samples and data about the animals found in Red Dead Online with Harriet and perfect pelts for more clothing variant for Gus.
Note: Varmint rifle with sedative ammo are fatal to small animals like bats, birds, fish, rats etc..
How to Equip a Trinket in Red Dead Online?
Where are the trinkets? Here's a complete guide on how to get a trinket like the the Buck Antler Trinket, the best trinket in the game by giving you the perk; 100% chance of getting a perfect pelt on all your animal near-clean kills. This trinket is perfect for naturalists and traders in hunting the perfect pelts and carcasses.
How to Unlock and Use the Trinkets from Gus (Naturalist)
For this example, we will unlock the Buck Antler Trinket
- Hunt an animal associated with the required material (antler from buck, male deers with horns)
- Skin it, look out for the antler in the upper right corner
- Once you get it and sell the antler to Gus
- Then buy the trinket with the required collector item
- How do you equip trinkets in Red Dead Online?
- Go to player menu and see it as a perk
Note: Trinkets from Gus are automatically equipped when bought, they only appear as passive perks viewed from "Player" menu, at the moment Gus' trinkets are not physical items, yet.
