How to Unlock All Endings in The Witcher 3 Remastered (and Romances)

Best and Worst Ending of Witcher 3

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt brings Geralt's journey to a massive climax where minor fatherly gestures toward Ciri decide the fate of the world. Beyond Ciri's destiny, your political maneuvers, regional choices, and romantic commitments shape the future of the Northern Realms.

Here is the definitive guide to triggering the best and worst outcomes across the Continent.

Ciri's Fate: The 5 Critical Choice Moments

Ciri's survival hinges on her self-confidence during her final confrontation with the White Frost. Throughout the main quest, five specific moments determine whether she finds the strength to survive. Securing at least 3 positive choices ensures Ciri lives.

1. "Blood on the Battlefield" (After Kaer Morhen)

  • Positive Choice: Say "I know what might lift your spirits" to start a snowball fight with Ciri.
  • Negative Choice: Say "Relax, you don't have to be good at everything" to drink alcohol with her.

2. "Blood on the Battlefield" (Audience with Emperor Emhyr)

  • Positive Choice: Refuse Emhyr's monetary reward ("Definitely needed it more than you").
  • Negative Choice: Accept the coin reward from the Emperor.
  • (Note: Visiting Emhyr is optional. Skipping Vizima entirely and going straight to Velen avoids this step.)

3. "Final Preparations" (The Lodge Meeting)

  • Positive Choice: Tell Ciri "You'll do fine on your own" and let her speak to the sorceresses alone.
  • Negative Choice: Accompany Ciri into the meeting room.

4. "Child of the Elder Blood" (Avallac'h's Laboratory)

  • Positive Choice: Tell Ciri "Go for it" and let her smash up Avallac'h's laboratory.
  • Negative Choice: Tell Ciri to "Calm down" and hand her Lara Dorren's necklace.

5. "Child of the Elder Blood" (Skjall's Grave)

  • Positive Choice: Say "Yeah, I'll go with you" to visit Skjall's grave in Hindarsfjall.
  • Negative Choice: Tell Ciri "There's no time" to visit his grave.

The Three Primary Ciri Endings

1. The Witcher Ending (Best Overall Outcome)

  • Conditions: Accumulate at least 3 positive choices AND do not take Ciri to see Emperor Emhyr (or ensure Nilfgaard loses the war).
  • Outcome: Ciri survives the White Frost. Geralt misleads Emperor Emhyr by reporting that Ciri perished. He then meets Ciri at the White Orchard tavern, gifts her a custom silver witcher sword, and the duo takes to the open road together.

2. The Empress Ending (Bittersweet Outcome)

  • Conditions: Accumulate at least 3 positive choices, bring Ciri to meet Emperor Emhyr in Vizima, AND ensure Nilfgaard wins the war (via the quest "Reason of State").
  • Outcome: Ciri survives the White Frost but recognizes that she can accomplish greater systemic good as a ruler. She bids an emotional farewell to Geralt in White Orchard before departing for Vizima to take the imperial throne.

3. The Tragedy Ending (Worst Outcome)

  • Conditions: Accumulate 3 or more negative choices across the 5 pivotal moments.
  • Outcome: Ciri lacks the inner confidence to survive her battle against the White Frost and perishes. A heartbroken Geralt returns to Crookback Bog, hunts down the last remaining Crone to retrieve Ciri's stolen medallion, and surrenders to grief inside the hut as monsters swarm the building.

Shaping the Continent: World States and Companions

The Ruler of Skellige

  • Cerys an Craite: Choosing Cerys ushers in an era of peace, economic unity, and stability across the Isles.
  • Hjalmar an Craite: Choosing Hjalmar leads to continuous, bloody military raids against Nilfgaardian coastal strongholds.
  • Svanrige Bran: Ignoring both an Craite siblings allows Svanrige to unite the clans under an absolute hereditary monarchy through civil war.

The Fate of the Northern War ("Reason of State")

  • Nilfgaard Victory: Protect Vernon Roche and kill Dijkstra. Nilfgaard conquers the North, Temeria is restored as an autonomous vassal state, and Emhyr secures his political reign.
  • Dijkstra's Dictatorship: Side with Dijkstra and permit the execution of Roche, Ves, and Thaler. Dijkstra defeats Nilfgaard and rules the North as a strict, industrial innovator.
  • Radovid's Tyranny: Ignore the assassination conspiracy entirely. King Radovid defeats Nilfgaard and expands genocidal witch hunts across the continent.

The Fate of the Bloody Baron & Velen

  • Free the Whispering Hillock Spirit: The spirit saves the orphans of Crookback Bog, but destroys the village of Downwarren. Anna is cursed into a water hag and dies when freed, driving the Baron to hang himself at Crow's Perch.
  • Destroy or Trap the Spirit: The Crones devour the orphans, but Downwarren survives. Anna loses her sanity due to trauma, and the Baron takes her to the Blue Mountains to search for a cure.

Geralt's Romance Outcomes

  • Yennefer Only: Geralt and Yennefer retire to a peaceful, comfortable life away from royal politics and witcher contracts.
  • Triss Only: Geralt moves to Kovir with Triss, where she serves as advisor to the king while Geralt takes occasional local contracts.
  • Romance Both (or Neither): Attempting to commit to both Triss and Yennefer triggers "It Takes Three to Tango," leaving Geralt alone.
