Assassin's Creed Odyssey Review: The 300 Game We Never Had

A historically-correct aged King Leonidas and his 300 Spartans opens the game against the invading Xerses' Persian troops. An Assassin's Creed game where the first trailer features a Spartan kick off the ledge, need more clues? Ubisoft did not emphasize Assassin's Creed Odyssey or marketed as 300 game but after playing a few minutes of  the game it is obvious. Dont' be surprised to see the badass Spartan king himself, not just in the prologue. More connection to Leonidas's spear will be revealed in the game.

While there are no proper 300 game out there, this game comes closest to one, the era, the armor, the premise and conquest mode where you get to participate in a battle with either Sparta or Athens. Cities are colorful and more vibrant than Egypt from the previous Assassin's Creed Origins. Coastlines, it makes sense Black Flag's best feature should be utilized for these naval combat opportunities.

The game recreated ancient Greece in its golden era where their place in history is being remembered, their wars being fought, famous thinkers being written and most influential perhaps,  their Greek mythology being told. Ancient polytheistic Greek religion is being practiced during the era, gigantic statues and impressive temples of their gods are all over the game, climbing it is almost a must, photo mode is no brainer for players who love arts or exploring.

Now for 300 and King Leonidas reference, the lore is actually related to him given the spear acts as your hidden blade this time around. To avoid spoilers, we cut the game related scenes and let you find it out in the game, here are the super cut of the Battle of the 300 cinematic in the game.

King Leonidas and the 300 Spartans

Death of King Leonidas and.. Xerxes?

This is indeed a 300 game under the guise of Assassin's Creed game, you get to explore the areas of the movie/comics like Thermopylae, the Hot Gates, Leonidas' grave and the cave where the traitor Ephialtes lead the Persian troops. Check out out the actual cave in-game from the walkthrough below.

From Spartan kick to Leonidas, Spartan armor set, centurion helmets, spear thrust killer move, the land of Sparta and more, this is indeed more of a 300 game rather than an Assassin's Creed game. The game maybe not be officially sanctioned by 300 author Frank Miller or 300 movie director Zack Snyder but this game in a nutshell is 300.

This is one of the main reason why players will love this game more than any other Assassin's Creed game. Caveat the generic side quests that feels like a grind and repetitive, but they all have dialogues and mini story. Choices and consequences also plays a role in the game. aside from the main story, sparing the lives of NPCs hostile to you, can make them appear again next time offering more side quests, rewards and XP. Armors and weapons even at the early part of the game looks well designed and very combat ready.

This game offers a full playthrough as a female player, that appeals to female fan base of the game a lot. And the map is huge! almost twice as big as Origins, The game rewards players who explore areas not marked on the map, and of course Easter eggs.

At this point, Ubisoft has reached the summit of Assassins Creed heaven, if this is not the conclusion of the series, how can they surpass this game? Unless they make an AC game bigger than this and make it an online multiplayer game MMO-like but more of what Fallout 76 is aiming for. But for us, we are crossing fingers for a For Honor - Assassin's Creed crossover game.
