Yes indeed, Steam Machines are ready and its debut will make it an early holiday present for the gaming community. It is coming with a new experience brought upon by the redesigned Steam Controller.

Linux-based? Does it matter?

Steam machines are powered by Steam OS based on Linux operating system. Currently there are only a handful of games featured on Steam's library specially AAA games that have Linux versions which in turn playable in Linux-based operating system. I think for now this will be the main reason for gamers to hesitate and hold on their money for a bit longer. Never fear for Alienware has anticipated this and they are making a Windows-based steam machine called Alienware Alpha.

Steam Machine for Windows

Alienware Alpha will run on Windows 8.1 enabling it to play like the PC and expanding playable games to a near 4,500 titles compared to the 1,200 playable on Steam machines. Alienware Alpha comes with one Xbox controller and an optional gaming keyboard/mouse. It will run like a transforming machine, without that sound and animation, wait not that. I mean like an interchangeable device a portable PC and console gaming platform. I personally prefer this option since I am a dedicated PC gamer and a Windows user. It would be truly convenient to have a rig that is part console, part laptop all wired-up into one hybrid device.

It was just once a dream, hype even, but Valve delivered and delves into improving gaming experience most notably when they proposed the Steam controller that will eliminate the use of keyboard and mouse on RTS and FPS titles. Judging from this demo, Steam controller, looks like every gamer's dream controller. According to Steam, Steam Controller features dual trackpads, HD haptic feedback, dual-stage triggers, back grip buttons, and fully-customizable control schemes. Your settings will be shareable to the Steam community and usable by others ala Github is to code repositories.

When it was first proposed by Valve's most notable co-founder Gabe Newell in 2012, the gaming communities were in a buzz. Valve has been reputed as the pioneers in gaming bringing us collection of games on virtual shelves on a budget, Steam store. 

Steam started a race of the significance of having a dedicated online portal of games building social connectivity between gamers and its fan base via internet. It has brought a significant value that made other top game publishers to follow and have their own online stores of games like Ubisoft, EA and Blizzard. Now with Steam machines and Steam controller, Valve is again pushing the boundaries of gaming norms.
