the Force is dead on this one |
Speculation IV, possible spoilers
Luke is dead or dies eventually in the upcoming Starwars movies.
Starwars 7 is thirty years after "The Return of the Jedi", many great and terrible things have happened to Luke Skywalker according to the Starwars stories outside the films. Luke dying, is possible because the Jedi we know at some point died and joined the dark side of the Force as the apprentice of Darth Sidious 's clone. He was eventually turned to the light and formed the new age for Jedi.

Speculation V, possible spoilers
Luke Skywalker is actually Kylo Ren.
This became the most common assumptions when the poster came out following the absence of Mark Hamill. I doubt this will be the case it's like saying BB8 is actually a Sith lord all along. An ultimate reveal is Starwars most notable twist since the original trilogy came out, so this relationship is very easy to speculate.

In addition to this, Luke was almost tempted to join his father Darth Vader and succumb to the dark side later in the expanded universe of Starwars, Episode 7 might be the retelling of that story. Starwars 7 director JJ Abrams clarified that Kylo Ren is obsessed with Darth Vader and he is actually working for Supreme Leader Snokes, a significant dark side disciple.
Speculation VI, major spoilers ahead
Kylo Ren will pave the way to Darth Caedus.
First we need to establish the family tree of the Skywalkers according to the history of the Starwars expanded universe.
After Starwars VI, Luke Skywalker married his former assassin, Palpatine's servant Mara Jade, who stands with him all throughout the foundation of the new Jedi order. Luke and Mara gave birth to a son Ben Skywalker, named after Obiwan Kenobi.
The Solos had twins Jacen and Jaina, years later their youngest son Anakin was born, named after his grandfather. The Skywalker and Solo family stayed close until Luke and Mara Jade went away to stop the invasion of Yuuzhan Vong, unknown sentient beings.

Now all of Anakin Skywalker's grandchildren grew up in the same household and are strong with the force. They became adept in the ways of the Force on their own rights under the tutelage of both Mara and Luke during the establishment of new Jedi order.
In the expanded universe, the galaxy never had a time of peace and the next generations of Skywalkers had participated in forging their own legacies in the galactic strife. One of such arch had tragedies that paved the way to the path to the dark side of one member of the Solo family.

Kylo Ren as Ben Skywalker,
“Nothing will stand in our way. I will finish what you started.” - Kylo Ren
This dialogue from Kylo Ren gave away his endearment for Darth Vader. JJ Abrams clarified that he is a fanatic hence the mask, black robes and red light saber but the director never revealed their relationship.

These stories are based on the expanded universe, they are yet to be told in the Starwars films. One way or the other, the upcoming Starwars films is bound to intersect in these especially with Han and Leia as one of the principal cast.
How about Starwars TV series for mature audiences?
The Disney conglomerate is delivering Marvel stories into live action, I won't be surprised if someday Starwars drops to the Television too. Please let it not be for teens, something for mature audiences like The Walking Dead, or near quality of HBO's Game of Thrones. It may be just wishful thinking now, but Starwars characters have endured extreme hardships just look at the life of Anakin Skywalker.
you can't smoke weed with this mask, my son |
He was fatherless, victim of child labor, came back only to witness his mother's demise, betrayed by his mentor, found happiness, then his wife died with his children. That is tragic and beautiful story, maybe now is the time to put Starwars live action in the TV limelight?
